A Successful Year,A Promising Future

The Regional Growth Partnership’s annual meeting offers us the opportunity to recognize the previous year’s successes across Northwest Ohio as well as to look ahead at new initiatives and possibilities to further elevate the region.

That’s certainly the case again this year. We celebrate the new jobs and investments created by businesses across the 17-county region. And we celebrate in collaboration with our economic development partners in Northwest Ohio – all of them critical to our regional accomplishments.

Moving ahead, the RGP will continue focusing on our core industries – those where we have a competitive advantage – and we confidently anticipate ongoing success.

Into 2023 and beyond, we will enhance our areas of focus on some new initiatives designed to elevate our competitiveness in the global economic development arena. We will be implementing aggressive strategies to attract white-collar businesses and knowledge-based workers.

Our plan is to position this region where we enthusiastically embrace these new initiatives, build on our current professional ecosystem, and draw these targeted businesses to Northwest Ohio.

Capitalizing on our inherent assets and striving toward these new opportunities will help drive our strategic efforts to discover and realize even greater success.

Business Development & Marketing | Site Selection Campaign

On Target

Business Development initiated a rigorous site selector campaign in 2022 intended to provide critical information about doing business in Northwest Ohio. The unique, creative campaign first identified 50 of the top national site consultants. It began with a personalized welcome video from RGP President Dean Monske emailed to each consultant inviting them to engage with a series of touchpoints and creative materials delivered through various channels over a two-month period.

Those innovative communications included:
  • 360-degree video
  • Cell phone video viewers
  • Story maps for data
  • Video testimonials
  • Vidbook presentation of area assets

Within the campaign, the RGP acknowledged the valuable role consultants play in streamlining projects, and the goal for the RGP was to provide necessary data to help them gauge whether Northwest Ohio is the right match for clients seeking location investment.

"Award Winning"

Gary Thompson, executive vice president at the Regional Growth Partnership, was presented a national award for his lifetime work in economic development. The Industrial Asset Management Council (IAMC) presented the Mary Jo Hanover Award at the association’s Spring 2022 Forum in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The award is presented annually to an economic developer who “exemplifies the spirit of the IAMC.”

IAMC is the leading industrial and manufacturing real estate trade association, offering professional development, networking opportunities and resources for its members in the U.S. and abroad.

“This is an extremely prestigious award recognizing dedication to the profession and a commitment to the growth of communities. Gary’s demonstrable efforts over the years, both with the RGP and IAMC, embody the definition of professional economic development.”

Digital Reality

The RGP unveiled a new initiative in 2022 – digital advertising – which immediately began paying huge dividends. Digital advertising is an enhanced lead generation tool that also elevates our goal of brand awareness. This strategy allows us to expand beyond our current customer reach … we’re getting in front of people who didn’t know we exist. In addition, we’re still able to target a specific audience and we’re able to reach that audience quicker. And it’s extremely cost-effective.

Business Development & Marketing | Social Media

A Social Breakthrough

Throughout 2022, the Regional Growth Partnership experienced continued growth across our social media channels. Thanks to a thriving content marketing and social media program, the RGP generated fresh content, attracted new followers, and engaged heavily with audiences. Since implementing this program, social media has become a primary source of website referrals and a quick way to engage with target audiences. Despite not having a Facebook page, RGP was still generating website traffic through the platform, prompting us to plan and develop a strategy to add this channel in 2023. With this new channel, the RGP aims to expand our social media presence and drive even more traffic to the website. Through social media, the RGP can promote successful projects and stories, foster connections, and increase awareness of real-time events and relevant content highlighting the Northwest Ohio region.

The Social Advantage

  • Social media accounts for 15% of website traffic
  • LinkedIn gained 1,098 new followers in 2022, a 42% increase from 2021
  • 2022 saw a 20% increase in engagements compared to 2021
  • Traffic to the website from social media increased by 6.3%; time on site also increased by 5%
  • LinkedIn was the 3rd highest source for site traffic, trailing only direct visits and organic Google searches
Business Development & Marketing | Site Marketing

A Site to be Seen

A cornerstone of the RGP’s marketing efforts over the years has been promoting the top sites across Northwest Ohio. The region has taken aggressive steps in building an inventory of shovel-ready and authenticated sites as well as spec buildings.

In marketing the sites, the RGP shoots drone video and then designs an email which includes photos, a map and key attributes of each respective site. In addition, the site marketing is also incorporated into the RGP’s digital advertising initiative. The target audience for this campaign is national site consultants.

The program’s effectiveness shined bright last year when a consultant received a site marketing email from the RGP just prior to visiting the region for a project where she was scheduled to tour some predetermined sites. Upon receiving the email, she contacted the RGP requesting that site be added to her visit, and thanked the organization for its impactful and valuable marketing content.

Business Development & Marketing | Lead Gen Programs

Leading the Way

The RGP Marketing team ran a campaign with Automotive News magazine highlighting opportunities in NW Ohio for companies in the EV supply chain. We promoted authenticated and shovel-ready sites as well as available spec buildings and large sites. This program generated 31 leads. Marketing also ran a program in Business Facilities magazine, similar to the prior, promoting our top sites for those in the EV supply chain. The program included digital ads highlighting the large sites available. Analytics for the first three months of the campaign found impressions exceeding 168,000. Clicks were well above 200 and the CTR averaged .13%. Those leads are being entered for email follow and digital advertising.

Business Development & Marketing | Video & Drone

A Pretty Picture

Our Marketing process begins by determining the purpose of proposed programs, followed by identifying goals, strategies, audiences and messaging. Once we have that, we need to develop content to help tell the story. And that point cannot be emphasized enough. Battling in a competitive industry, we are fighting to get our messages through to our target audiences, fighting through the noise of our competition. It’s imperative we have the right content – valuable, timely, newsworthy, creative, engaging – content that’s going to get them to respond, take action, answer and engage.

The RGP has been as aggressive as any economic development organization in developing compelling video stories which help tell the story about Northwest Ohio. We’ve invested much time and resources into video and drone, and the results are demonstrated by the high user engagement rate.

Resources & Services | Spec Buildings

Build, Baby Build

Over the past several years, the Regional Growth Partnership, in conjunction with its economic development collaborators across Northwest Ohio, has prioritized product development. We understand companies seeking new locations sometimes need more than just a site. We know that having an inventory of spec buildings keeps us in the competitive mix to land new projects.

National site consultant Jason Hamman said industrial inventory in the Midwest is low, so having spec buildings keeps a community competitive.

Having available space gets you a ticket into the dance. Site selection is about risk mitigation, so being able to eliminate the time and cost aspects of taking a site and making it development ready, that really jumpstarts the timeline for a client to make a decision about a particular site.”

- Jason Hamman, President, Hamman Consulting Group

The Ohio Site Inventory Program (OSIP) was established to create inventory within the state that has not been organically developed by the market. The primary goal of OSIP is to fill gaps in Ohio’s site inventory with real estate targeting near-term sector wins to ensure our state is more competitive for reactive site selection projects.

In an effort to effectively utilize the OSIP program, the RGP has worked with the region’s LEDOs, developers and likely program participants to build the project pipeline.

Since the program’s inception, 13 projects across Northwest Ohio have been offered assistance though the OSIP Program, with 4-5 more scheduled for construction. And the RGP continues to build-out that pipeline.

Most recently, the RGP worked with Ohio Logistics to secure a $1 million JobsOhio OSIP grant to help construct a 100,000 spec building in Bowling Green.

Resources & Services | Talent & Workforce

A Talented Team

Over the last several years, the RGP has committed to addressing the workforce needs of companies across Northwest Ohio by putting forth additional resources and support. Along with key partners across the region as well as JobsOhio, we continue to push initiatives designed to align talent with the right skill sets to meet business demand today and tomorrow. In addition, we work to connect businesses with training resources and services to build their workforce.

Making Ohio

Pilot program for Northwest Ohio launched in Q3 2022 to promote awareness of manufacturing as a career choice. Marketing efforts drove interested candidates into funnel for vetting where they were directed to available jobs or continued workforce training.

6-Month Results
  • 33 direct job placements
  • 5 directed for further ed/training

Talent Acquisition Services

The JobsOhio Talent Acquisition Services (TAS) program helps identify a company’s talent challenges and builds sustainable talent recruitment strategies that support every stage of the candidate’s journey. A significant achievement in 2022 was the successful completion of a TAS program with Altenloh, Brinck & Company, which received an $85,000 TAS incentive, leading to the creation of 181 new jobs.

The TAS program implemented and successfully executed three strategies to attract new workers to Altenloh:
  • Develop new recruiting brand
  • Create career site and social media strategy
  • Develop targeted job posting campaign

The research department is of great value in utilizing data to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of the region. By evaluating demographic and workforce data, the research team can promote economic growth in Northwest Ohio and construct a compelling business case for companies considering investing in the area.

2022 Successes and Metrics:

  • Fulfilled 100% of client requests
  • Developed more than 50 data/talking points for bus dev/marketing

RGP & JobsOhio | Lima Vibrancy Grant

Downtown ...

Everything’sWaitingfor You!

An exciting, aggressive effort to revitalize downtown Lima is under way. The project involves renovating buildings and creating new workspaces, shops, studios and flats. With major support through the JobsOhio Vibrant Communities Program and the Regional Growth Partnership, Lima sees this as an opportunity for the community to take flight.

JobsOhio created the program to assist distressed, small and mid-size cities with catalytic development projects that fulfill a market need and represent a significant reinvestment in the community.

“We really want to make downtown a destination place … an entertainment district. This JobsOhio Grant has sparked a lot of downtown revitalization.”

RGP Builds Hope Through Habitat for Humanity

The Regional Growth Partnership and JobsOhio recently joined together to contribute toward a Habitat for Humanity project in Sandusky County. Representatives from both groups volunteered to help build a new home for a family of six.

A dozen staff members between the two agencies contributed their building skills over several shifts. The work included the construction of an outdoor storage shed. As part of JobsOhio’s Charitable Giving Initiative, the RGP considered volunteer opportunities within the Northwest Ohio region, ultimately choosing the Habitat project in Fremont.

“We could not think of a better team-building project than to help build a safe and comfortable home for a single mother and her children. When you can get outside and get hands-on within the community, sweat a little bit and make a difference, that’s very fulfilling."

RGP & JobsOhio | Hometown Heroes

A Salute to Service

To honor servicemen and women from the local community, JobsOhio and the Regional Growth Partnership, in conjunction with the Toledo Chamber, hosted a Hometown Heroes event at a Toledo Walleye game.

Hometown Heroes represents Ohio’s desire to thank those who serve our country, recognize the sacrifices they make, and let them know, regardless of where they are stationed, Ohio always welcomes them home.

The event attracted 135 Veterans and Active Military, starting with the retiring commander of the 180th Fighter Wing doing the ceremonial puck drop. During intermissions, the military guests were able to ride around the rink in the famous “Fanboni.” And perhaps the greatest highlight was four future soldiers giving their oath to enlist in the U.S. Army, which was broadcast on the arena’s jumbotron.

Hometown Heroes events also allow military members and their families to connect with their local community leaders, legislators, and industry leaders. And the events offer an opportunity for the community to share their appreciation and thank those who serve their country.
