Van Wert Site Officially Certified for Development, Targeting Food/Beverage Industry

VAN WERT, Ohio – To further capitalize on the existing assets which have made this region a leading location for the food processing industry, Van Wert finalized the certification process of a major site, designating it as shovel ready for new development.

The completion of this arduous certification process was recognized Friday during an awards ceremony. Stacy Adam, executive director of the Van Wert Area Economic Development Corporation, accepted an award from Tim Wells, AEP Ohio, during at afternoon event at Vantage Career Center.

“This community came together and worked very hard toward achieving this certification … everyone should be proud,” said Adam, recognizing representatives from both the city and county, as well as private sector partners. “This designation tells businesses that Van Wert understands the urgency of speed to market.”

In 2015, AEP Ohio unveiled an initiative to designate five Northwest Ohio sites as certified and shovel ready. The five economic development groups representing these sites (Van Wert, Findlay, Lima, Bucyrus, Tiffin) worked closely with AEP Ohio to complete the process.

“AEP Ohio is pleased to help local economic development organizations develop capacity, and this program will help make Van Wert more competitive,” said Tim Wells, economic and business development manager, AEP Ohio.

“Certification provides an even greater advantage for Van Wert and the other counties, helping them stay ahead of national and global competition,” he added. “How this site certification process came together should give confidence to those seeking new sites that Northwest Ohio has got its act together.”

The Regional Growth Partnership, the lead economic development organization serving Northwest Ohio, has already begun an aggressive national marketing campaign to food industry executive and site consultants.

“Today, companies seeking new locations and the site consultants helping them, want and demand sites that are ready today,” said Dean Monske, president and CEO, Regional Growth Partnership. “The certification of these sites adds yet another piece to our already successful storyline of Northwest Ohio being a top location for the food-beverage industry.”

Northwest Ohio is one of the leading manufacturers of food, equipment and agricultural products in the United States, employing more than 12,000 people in the industry. This location in the U.S. marketplace, combined with a comprehensive transportation network and intermodal connections, allows for fast, efficient and cost-effective access to customers.

In just the past three years, Northwest Ohio’s food processing industry has generated nearly 2,000 new jobs with capital investment close to $600 million.
