Case Study: Calphalon

Company Description

Calphalon is a global leader in the manufacturing of high-end cookware, cutlery, bakeware and kitchen accessories. The company also offers barware products, including mixing and serving accessories, and textiles products such as kitchen towels, aprons, potholders and solid terry dishcloths and kitchen towels. Founded in 1963 in Perrysburg, Ohio, Calphalon was formerly known as Commercial Aluminum Cookware Company. Calphalon operates as a subsidiary of Newell Rubbermaid, a global marketer of consumer and commercial products.

Project Summary

Parent company Newell Rubbermaid announced plans to consolidate its manufacturing operations (Perrysburg, China) and warehousing/distribution facilities (Toledo, China) into one location. Along with the chosen site in Wood County, several other locations in other states and offshore were seriously considered. Plans called for a $20 million investment to construct a 363,000-square-foot facility to handle manufacturing and distribution of the Calphalon product line. The Regional Growth Partnership worked collaboratively with the Wood County Economic Development Commission, the Ohio Department of Transportation and JobsOhio to craft an attractive incentive package for the company, which included tax abatement, an infrastructure improvement grant and a job creation tax credit.

Why Northwest Ohio?

Through the proactive efforts of local and state economic development officials, the RGP and its partners were able to retain one of the world’s most recognized kitchen product manufacturers.  Executives at parent company Newell Rubbermaid credited the region’s trained and skilled workforce, as well as the region’s deep-seated roots in manufacturing, as key factors in its decision to expand in Northwest Ohio. In addition, the region’s logistical assets, including three of the country’s most traveled highways, further supported the case for the Wood County site.
